Redefining Modern Luxury

What is luxury? For some, it’s designer clothes or glittering jewels. Luxury, however, can also be found in life’s finer details like down pillows, intricate sculptures, and silk rugs.

Fernando Rodriguez, Founder and Creative Director of Fernando Rodriguez Studio, says, “Luxury is a state of mind,” and it’s deeply personal.

Luxury has long been linked to wealth and status, but its symbols evolve. Take the color purple: once a mark of nobility, its rarity made it the epitome of luxury. Now, we have access to endless colors and tones.

After years spent indoors, homeowners have embraced a new form of luxury marked by comfort and individuality. Increased time at home also emphasized the importance of quality and purposeful decor. Who wants to sit on uncomfortable chairs every day, no matter how beautiful they may be?

HANDMADE RUGS

Handmade rugs capture the essence of luxury, balancing beauty, sophistication, and practicality. Crafted over months or even years with age-old techniques, these rugs are built to last for decades. Made from natural fibers like wool, silk, hemp, and jute, they embody timeless elegance.

Sandra Funk, CEO and Creative Director of House of Funk, puts it simply: “Natural materials are the greatest luxury of all.”

1. Simplicity—

Beauty lies in simplicity, and that doesn’t mean minimalism. While vibrant colors can liven up a home, soft natural tones are equally inviting.

    • modern rug. gray, blue, and white splatter pattern. made with real silk
    • striped modern rug with grays, blues, and whites

Grays and whites carry an innate opulence, especially when woven into unique abstract patterns that add a luxurious touch to any space.

    2. Sensation—

What do you want underfoot in the morning or after a long day? A rug sets the tone for a luxurious, comfortable home.

Plush rugs offer unmatched softness, combining comfort with a luxurious look. Their velvety texture and rich appearance elevate any space, adding refinement and elegance.

Silk rugs take luxury to another level. With a smooth, delicate feel—like water slipping through your fingers—and a lustrous sheen, a silk rug becomes the focal point of any room.

      3. Space—

Why settle for one rug when you can have several? There are two ways you can utilize multiple rugs in your designs:

        1. Use rugs to define and anchor different spaces and styles.

        2. Layer rugs of various sizes and textures adds instant luxury.

Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors recommends a neutral flat weave as the base with a patterned vintage rug on top. The possibilities are endless for a more spacious, luxurious feel.

The definition of luxury has changed. It is no longer about blatant exclusivity, it’s a marker of individuality.
